#SEAGames2017: Get To Know Our Figure Skating Representatives!

For the first time since its inception, the SEA Games will include a winter sport: figure skating. The Philippines will send out four of its elite skaters to compete for gold, but who exactly are these four talented skaters?

 

MEN

Jules Alpe

Jules Alpe at the 2017 Asian Winter Games

Jules is the 2016 junior national silver medalist. He placed second in the 2017 Jegvirag Cup Junior Men’s division and recently made his senior debut in an international competition at the 2017 Asian Winter Games held in Sapporo, Japan. He trains in the Philippines and aims to represent the country at the 2018 World Junior Championships.

Competition Highlights:

  • 2017 Asian Winter Games – 17th
  • 2017 Jegvirag Cup – 2nd Juniors
  • 2017 Sofia Trophy – 4th Juniors

 

Michael Christian Martinez

Michael Christian Martinez at the 2017 World Championship

Michael is the 2016 national champion and Southeast Asia’s first Olympian for figure skating. He placed 19th in the 2014 Sochi Olympics and has since represented the Philippines in major competitions such as the ISU Grand Prix, Four Continents, and the World Championship. He is most known for his perfect teardrop-shaped Biellmann spin. He trains in the USA and aims to represent the country in the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.

Competition Highlights:

  • 2017 World Championships – 24th
  • 2017 Four Continents – 14th
  • 2016 Volvo Open Cup – 5th
  • 2015 Cup of China (ISU Grand Prix) – 6th
  • 2015 Asian Trophy – 1st

 

LADIES

Samantha Cabiles

Samantha Cabiles at the 2013 JGP Tallinn Cup

Samantha is the 2016 national silver medallist. Her senior debut in an international competition was at the 2017 Asian Winter Games held in Sapporo, Japan, but has previously represented the Philippines in various international competitions such as the 2015 Junior Grand Prix in Nagoya and Colorado Springs. She trains in the USA.

Competition Highlights:

  • 2017 Asian Winter Games – 15th
  • 2016 Philippine Nationals – 2nd
  • 2015 Reykjavik International Games – 2nd Juniors
  • 2015 Triglav Trophy – 5th Juniors

 

Alisson Krystle Perticheto

Alisson Krystle Perticheto at the 2015 Four Continents Championship

Alisson is the 2016 national champion. She also placed first in the 2017 Egna Spring Trophy held last April and has represented the country in major international competitions such as the 2015 Four Continents Championship and 2015 World Championships, where she was up against the most elite figure skating athletes. She trains in Switzerland and Germany.

Competition Highlights:

  • 2017 Egna Trophy – 1st
  • 2016 Philippine Nationals – 1st
  • 2015 World Championships – 34th
  • 2015 Four Continents – 16th
  • 2015 Skate Helena – 2nd

Aside from cheering for our own, some skaters to keep a sharp eye on are Malaysian representatives Julian Yee and Kai Xiang Chew for Men, and Singaporean representatives Chloe Ing and Shuran Yu for Ladies.
